Philosophy

Solution Focused

Merle uses brief, solution-focused therapy, which means that after just 6-8 sessions, people can often clearly see what's been happening in their relationships, and have a good sense of what to do about it.

The Art of Loving

Love is not simply a feeling, but it is a skill that can be learned and practiced. Practicing the art of loving enables us to interact with everyone we encounter in healthier and more intelligent ways.

We can learn this "art" from researched-based methods discovered from the human sciences, and also by putting into practice our most important spiritual values.

Each human person is unique and has infinite value. Because of this, we can deal successfully with every crisis when our relationships are based on mutual respect and love.

This attitude can improve relationships with everyone, from spouses and children to co-workers and neighbors. Mutual love and respect can become the norm, and then difficulties become a catalyst for improving individual and relational health.

Merle has helped over 3,000 couples stay together.

Biography

Growing Up

Merle Mullins grew up playing baseball, hiking, fishing, and helping on his grandfather's farm in rural Pennsylvania. During high school and college, he worked in construction and in factories.

Realizing that one of his greatest passions is to understand what makes people truly happy as individuals and in relationships, he studied Philosophy, Theology, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Counseling. His education and life experience gave him a deep appreciation for Catholic and Protestant faith traditions, for the values present in other faiths, and for the insights gained by research and study in the Human Sciences.

Family man

Married in 1981, he has lived in Harrisburg, PA, with his wife Molly and their five children since 1984. Merle enjoys the cultural and arts events available in Harrisburg, Washington D.C., and New York. Merle has worked as a marriage, family, and addiction counselor for over 30 years, including 15 in close collaboration with churches in the Harrisburg, Hershey, and York areas. After all this time, Merle is more enthusiastic than ever about helping people overcome life's challenges.
